New update available for Flash CS4!

I am very happy to announce that today we shipped a free update to Flash CS4 which addresses most of the issues that people have been having with it. Many of you gave some very honest feedback in this post and I want you to know that it was instrumental in getting this update out. The Flash team has been working around the clock to fix these issues so I want to give a big shout out to them for their tireless work. Product manager Richard Galvan has all the details on the bugs fixed in this update. Go and get the update and please let me know how it works for you.

How come the Adobe Updater doesn’t find it? People are telling each other about this update through email and twitter, but shouldn’t it just appear in the standard way?

YES! It no longer (temporarily)freezes my computer when I click “Export for Actionscript”! :D That was probably the thing I was most annoyed at.

Great Disney character as file icon by the way. Lol, how did that happen?

I’ve been updated. But I’m disappointed while loading old fla files are still crash; And now, Writing script on both Flash IDE and TextMate will cause problems too, while click the \Go to Source\ button on the IDE.
Or maybe is not the TextMate + Flash IDE fault. I don’t know.

I was hoping You could solve problem with Flash CS4 on mac os x.
But after installing this update I still have my Flash IDE consuming ~20% CPU with 5 files opened while idling in background.

Any idea if its only my problem? I googled something about it and it seems its not.

Anyway, thanks for the update :)

    Little problem on Macintosh
I have a Macintosh OSX 10.5.7, when I tried to install the update, I saw an error message showing a problem with Safari (4.0 Beta). You must uninstall the Beta version of Safari to install the update and It works fine :-)

I hope this update fix my problems

  15. May 14th, 2009 | 6:30 am

The install went very smooth. So far so good with stability. Thanks to the Flash team for the update.

I do still have one issue that I was hoping would be fixed. I’ve got a project with basically three buttons, each one loads an animation and/or some text. One of the animations is fairly long (2 minutes). If I open up that animation movie clip and scrub through the timeline, I don’t hear the audio. If I publish, everything works fine. If I create a new fla and copy the animation into it, I can scrub the timeline and hear the audio. So when I’m finished with the animation, I have to copy the movie clip from the new fla and paste it into the larger project. I’ve got 3 other large fla’s that are set up the exact same way and they all exhibit the same behavior. It works to copy/paste, but it’s a little clunky and makes it more difficult to track changes.

I did not have any problems updating. Try “Help/updates” on the main menu.

Hi Lee, good to see an update, that’s a huge list of fixed bugs, none of the ones I submitted though, and weird enough, I haven’t experienced any of the bugs in the fixed list… anyway, it’s a massive list for a release product, obviously there is a problem.

And… “fix as many more as we can for a future version of Flash”?

Maybe next time we pay Adobe for the app until in a future version of Flash the bugs are minimal?, I mean… not a single client I work for would pay for an unfinished product and be happy to wait for fixes until the next time I milk the cow

Downloaded and installed. I can barely contain how excited I am that all that stuff got fixed. Much better to have a ton of stuff fixed all at once than little things here and there with updates constantly. Thanks Adobe!

  22. May 14th, 2009 | 11:00 am

    Thx for the 411!

  23. May 14th, 2009 | 11:41 am

We all appreciate the huge list of fixes! I did notice though that ’show in library’ stopped working as soon as I installed this update.
    1) select a movie click instance
    2) right-click and select ’show in library’
    3) witness nothing happening

  24. May 14th, 2009 | 1:37 pm

I just downloaded it. I’m in the middle of an amfphp using project. The Flash Player safety stopped the debugging, because it tried to connect to the internet. Not good :(
The other things should be fine.. I had 5 minutes to test it. But this is annoying.

One thing I found is that sometimes selecting a dynamic textfield will pause a bit in CS4 but playback on timeline is actually smoother in CS4 than CS3.

  32. May 17th, 2009 | 4:37 am

and it not work correctly. can not create real 3d rotation with this tool
but rotation with actionscript is correct

    Updated successfully.

But I cannot find much progress in this update.

  36. June 18th, 2009 | 1:38 pm

That fixed a bunch of bugs… but there are at least three times as many bugs yet to fix.

Hopefully they will get it right soon. We shouldn’t have to wait until CS5 to get this program working the way it should!

I installed the update when it came out…. flash works better BUT there´s still a big issue…. the fonts management is really VERY SLOW, I tried to work with this CS4 and its update for 2 months….. BUT…. it really got me tired! I went back last week to CS3…!!!

The Problem: everything works fast now BUT when I click the “text tool” Flash Freezes for 5 to 10 seconds, when I try to select a different font flash freezes a lot to read it, it impossible to work that way!

The Solution: Macromedia, buy flash again!!! your programmers are better than adobe´s!

    Cheers

When you make a very small shape, it’s blocky and you can’t edit the curves. The selection box and the vectors when you use the subselection tool are all offset, down and to the right, always. The new motion tweens make it extremely difficult to make an ease in and ease out. When you use the armature for more than say, 50 frames, it goes so slow its almost unusable. The armature thing uses the new motion tween structure, but doesn’t let you even use the motion editor, so you can forget having any sense of control over the easing like with the graph editor. Sometimes the onion skinning tool just doesn’t work at all. Sometimes when you have multiple instances of the same symbol and you edit one inside, the others are not updated until you back out of that symbol. This is a ridiculous amount of bugs and bad design flaws. And this is just my first week using it. I don’t understand how a new version of something that originally worked great can have so many new flaws. I haven’t used the 3D thing much yet, but i cant wait to see what wonderful bugs I’ll find in there. That new update made it faster, but its still barely usable.

and WHY does the onion skin keep shutting down?????? it worked perfectly for every single other version of flash, and now i can hardly use it because everytime i move anything with it on, it stops working until i lock all the layers, unlock them, then turn the onion skin back on. why why why?? its not fair.

Flash CS4 Professional has some major issues with handling fonts and I don’t see anyone addressing this! I don’t have time to wait 15 minutes while Flash CS4 Pro decides if it will actually render the text in my text box after I spend the time typing it all in. I plan on calling out to California this week and finding out 1) if there are still people interested in customer service at Adobe and 2) if I can have a license for Flash CS3 Pro as this was a mush more stable product with none of the problems that I have encountered with Flash CS4 Pro. Is anyone listening out there?!?

  42. September 15th, 2009 | 4:50 am

I cannot install the update. I have Flash CS4 10.0.2 and I work on Mac OSX 10.5.8. It says that it cannot install the updates therefore ask me to press quit and nothing happens. Can someone advise me how to go ahead with this as I am working on a big project and I need to see if this will fix few problems, most of all, I cannot scroll down the page in the Actionscript panel and cannot adjust the script accordingly.

    Many thanks

I installed this update. Nothing help to the superb slow performance problem. We have colleagues who are traveling around with their ThinkPad T400/T400s. They all reported the same problems and downgraded to CS3.
We wanna call Adobe for offical refund of our newly purchased CS4 master piece.

I’m also having the same problem as #40. The onion skin is very hard to work with in CS4. Why do objects have to be hidden and unlocked for the Onion skin to work? That is very counterintuitive if I’m animating a character that has to interact with it’s surroundings and I can’t see those surrounding while I animate. It’s frustrating. Hope there’s an update soon.

i just cannot believe that the major bug with the onion skinning (see comment #40) was already reported in may 2009 and is still not fixed by jan 2010! flash cs4 is completely unusable for frame by frame animation with this bug not fixed. dear flash team, when are you planning to get this finally done?!?

Mac OS X 10.6.2 – Flash CS4 still can’t be handled by Spaces… sometimes different windows are on different Spaces forming a infinite loop. Welcome to the future.
Also Flash crashes if things get too complex (>100 mb assets (on a 8 Core Mac Pro with 8GB RAM!!))
This happens EVER DAY since I bought the Master Edition.

Please… find a GUI that works with OSX!!

I have installed the update, but Flash still freezes in the exact same place each time. I am using Digital Classroom to learn Flash and I can’t get past this one spot, it freezes every time. Is it Vista? Is it the fact that my computer keeps telling me that I don’t have permission to save in this location, even though I am the only user? HELP!!! I can’t learn when I am stuck in the same spot.
