Got a complaint about Flash CS4?
![]() |
Overall Flash CS4 is an awesome release that I have been using daily for several months with no major issues. But I have heard a slew of complaints from other people during my travels as well as on Twitter. Richard Galvan who is the PM for Flash has written a post on his blog asking for feedback. So please go and make a comment if you have been having ANY issues with the tool. Don’t complain to me about stuff unless you have commented there first since that is the place where the Flash team will see it. |

welcome back, I was having Lee withdrawals for a while
Hey lee!,
Just a quick question about CS4/FP10, just say you have a button you hover over and then tween the z-axis of an item in front of it, the button you hover over will switch between the mouse over and mouse out state, which is really really annoying, dont know wether this is a bug or not but its put a right spanner in the works on something im working on
.

I’ve been trying to leave a comment about the appalling help system for the last half an hour, but I keep getting “The document contains no data” errors when I submit my comment.
All I wanted to say was that it is completely unusable and the only sensible solution from a users perspective is to revert to the previous version. I actually have CS3 open at all times when I’m working in CS4 just so that I can use the help file as reference. Truly rubbish.
thanks Lee I have some issues in updating and the text tool that I will report about it
The Adobe Blog won’t accept my comments:
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.
There is also a thread in the Flash Forums going.

[...] With Adobe Flash CS4 being out for a few months now, is there anything about it that is bugging you? (except for the AS editor)
If so, head over to Lee’s blog and let your voice be heard. [...]
Performance on Mac is my #1 gripe. I love the new features, but just selecting objects (especially components) on the stage seems to be very sluggish at times. Is that the new stage core rendering engine or what?
I discovered an annoying problem with the Warnings Mode for Actionscript 3 projects. It would take FOREVER to compile with components on the stage. I discovered that if I unchecked it, everything compiled much faster.
Do we know why we need Warnings Mode?

I have had bugs stating Flash will be closing due to a fatal error several times. I am participating in the bug collection process so I hope my messages are helping with a quick fix update patch soon. I also had a memory issue mostly happens when I am encoding multiple video files to f4v.
The new Panels in the IDE are nice, but whenever I use the Delta wheel to scroll down, if in the process my mouse gets over a drop down or property, it stops scrolling the panel and begins modifying or scrolling that property. Drives me NUTS.
I’m a developer using Flashdevelop to program and CS4 to compile and manage my assets. I’m unsatisfied.
Some annoyens that pop into my mind.
- The library is waaay to slow.
- Updating sound encoding in library can sometimes show Javascript error (this is not really an anoyance since it’s rare and reproducible, but is the library done in javascript or something?)
- You can’t directly drag assets to folders in the library. Altough it highlights them, they just land in the top directory.
- About 4 or 5 crashbugs a day, mostly on compilation.
- Sometimes compilation keeps failing without showing errors, restarting flash is the only solution.
- Editing text field properties can’t be undone. Very frustrating.
- Text embedding doing weird stuff. Question marks not being embedded, bold textfields turning normal (I had to apply a textformat to fix that one) etc.
And I probably forgot a few. Most of these problems I’ve had in all my projects since the release. So this thing clearly isn’t finished. I hated CS3 as a developer. CS4 is even worse.
problem that I have to deal with every 5 minutes or so is with OS X Spaces
http://www.jonnymac.com/blog/2008/11/04/flash-cs4-bug-with-os-x-spaces/
and something terrifying I just found out
http://labs.bigspaceship.com/2009/01/08/flash-cs4-library-issue/
Thanks for posting this. I’ve reverted to CS3 at work (Vista 64 bit) until they handle most of these issues. I’m glad hearing that all the known issues are actually being examined now! I was starting to get very frustrated with Adobe.
I assume you’re also leaving these comments on Richard’s blog right?
Lee, what do you think the chances of gripes getting addressed? Not to sound jaded (though I am) I just wonder how likely the energy invested will pay off.
Some of the issues are basically “do good QA”. Does this even need stating?
This time it is very likely they will be addressed, especially performance issues. There has been talk of a possible update to fix the issues.
Lee:
thanks for the direct approach. Just the fact of the transparency on your part of getting feedback is always great and another reason why this blog is a haven for those using Flash since its initial release (Flash4..if not mistaken)
Thanks..
Yep, Lee does kick ass and just remember, don’t shoot the messenger. He always bring us the best good news and sometimes, a little not so good. Not his fault though. Keep up the great work Lee!
I use it all the time, no issues for me.
Stu > Agreed, the online help is really annoying. If you pull your network cable out you’ll find the offline help is still actually there, but Adobe have chosen online “community” help to be the default (aarrghhh!!!!). To get back to good old offline help that works the good old way, i.e. you type in the object you want the docs for and actually get them, *without* having to unplug your network cable, here’s the trick:
Open Flash, go to Windows>Extensions>Connections
A little menu opens. Use the small options button top-right and choose Offline options and tick “Keep me offline”.
Hey presto you’re back to normal, logical offline docs.
Hope that helps, I know it’s saved me from a nervous breakdown…
Suggestion for help. Would it not be possible under the help menu to simply choose between online community help and offline AS3 reference? It’s annoying to have these mixed, and the option to turn off online help is all to well hidden at the moment.
(I tried to sumbit this comment to Richard Galvan’s blog, but it’s not accepting comments right now.)
Should have a switch ON/OFF to disable flash player as workspace runtime for editing in CS4.
Have a ON/OFF switch for old Help vs new help and CS4 is good with all the panels except help that is opening in a Browser window. It should be opening in flash using webkit!!!!!!!
CS3 gives better swf output when theres many tween on the workspace while CS4 output missing frames and much more! For some projects there’s no way I can use CS4. Again its a performance issue.
The blog site for feedback is not working, some Moveable type error resulted after I made my comments. I always wonder why big companies don’t make it easier to obtain this feedback. I understand that there is an option that I have to enable Adobe to monitor my usage (whatever that means..) of every single adobe product I have installed, but it seems just common sense and a bit more human, to have a “Provide Feedback” link built into the program. We should not be forced to agree to unknown monitoring techniques of all installed applications, just for the “privilege” to provide feedback.
Complaints:
- IDE too slow and buggy. Working in Flash 8 looks super-fast in comparison.
- too expensive in Europe.
- still many bugs related to simultaneous use of as3 and timeline. (Yes, some people want to program classes and still use the most basic properties of the timeline such as keyframes !!)
- no JIRA for IDE. So many adobe blogs that providing feedback becomes puzzling and apparently useless (blog seems good for boasting, not for listening).
Conclusion: Adobe should test the product before release, by hiring large-spectrum flash testers(ie not only “free” developpers).
With bigger FLA files (under 100 mb) Flash CS4 will take up multiple gigabytes of harddrive space. Happens to me – Mac OS X 10.5, 2GB RAM working with 50 mb FLA took almost 10 GB of HD!
I opened up a cs3 flash file in cs4 pro. My root preloader has a mask that contains a shape tween. The shape tween is now continually tweening … basically my preloader is animating while I am trying to write code.
What is this all about?
Also, cs4 has crashed on me 3 times in 3 days. Not good.
just tried to leave feedback there, no luck… here is the error:
Rebuild failed: Writing to ‘/site/blogs.adobe.com/htdocs/rgalvan/2009/01/concerns_and_issues_with_flash.html’ failed: Opening local file ‘/site/blogs.adobe.com/htdocs/rgalvan/2009/01/concerns_and_issues_with_flash.html’ failed: Read-only file system
btw. Thanks for the tip Lee, the space to talk about CS4 bugs is definitely needed.
This guy http://adobegripes.tumblr.com/ has a few comments about user interfaces in Adobe products.
Wow … again … more problems. I added a static text box to a movie clip. After doing so, I could no longer access movie clip properties on the stage (was trying to give a movie clip an instance name). Only the text box properties were able to be seen. Then … CRASH!
I am getting seriously annoyed. So far NOT GOOD! Understand that I have used Flash since its third version. CS4 is by far the most buggy release to date. Weak!!!!
Hi there,
Flash CS4 is wonderful, except for one thing :
The 3D Rotation (using Y or X axis, whatever) makes the object it’s applied on (be it text, image, video…) somewhat blurry.
That’s extremely annoying, and it won’t go away.
Lee, I believe that’s happening to your video clip too, in your fancy player example (http://theflashblog.com/?p=466).
Whenever the 3D flip effect is applied, everything gets blurry.
Hi again Lee, any way to make the “that is the place where the Flash team will see it.” part work, maybe Richard’s e-mail address? I mean, I keep remembering/finding more and more bugs while I wait for that blog to work
The help system sucks. I too have flash cs3 open all the time, just so that I can use the help system. Also, when I try to change a font, the list pops-up and its reaaaaaaally slow to scroll
Genaro
I wrote a huge list and tried to post it, but the comment system always gives an error… which actually seems pretty appropriate now that I think about it.
In general, CS4 feels much more like a proof-of-concept for the new UI than a complete shipping product.
I also tried posting a comment on Galvan’s post, and was denied. Then I raised a red flag to the anti-spam application by trying again.. lol.
First, I LOVE CS4’s interface. The ease of creating and saving my ideal workspace is great. The look is great. The ability to add SWC’s as easily as class paths is awesome. The improved Flash/Flex workflow is undoubtedly one of the best new features.
That said, CS4’s performance is garbage. I believe that the stage rendering is causing a huge memory leak, making everything sluggish after opening and closing a few files.
And it crashes constantly.. When opening a file. When closing a file. When saving a file. When switching to another tabbed file. When adding a keyframe. I’m sure the list goes on, but that’s all I’ve experienced.
I see that there are many other users who are experiencing the same issues, and I sure hope that they get fixed quickly.
The only other complaint I have is that yes, the new help system is for the dogs. I’ve experienced times where the Adobe servers are very slow, causing a delay in accessing the API docs. I am aware of the option to select offline viewing through the Connections extension, but it’s still a pain compared to the old help system. Plus, only the AS3 API docs are available offline. If you need to reference the AS2 docs or the additional general help files, you must go online.
Thanks for all you do, Lee!
I would certainly like to be able to press a key and have my AS3 code reformatted within Flex. This has been a basic ability for more than 10 years..
I like the common interface of all their applications and I’m sure the common code base is nice for them as well, but it probably also explains their sluggish moves to fix bugs and add features. Not very agile..
I’d say, if adobe eventually moves away from open source tools as a method for developing in their technologies, it could be a serious blow to the developer. For that reason, I wish they would just drop Flash CS4 as a code editor.
The Tween class have so many bugs when used in a class with others tweens, to work it need to be on the scope of class not inside a function o/
(Well..I could’nt post on galvan’s blog – lol – then here it is:)
Perhaps I’m wrong, but it seems that – besides this post -there is no official link for posting bugs and “concerns” about CS4 IDE (I remember that the JIRA site mentions “Flash Player” but NOT “Flash IDE” ???)
And that’s…. just one more “concern” about CS4 (but plainly consistent with the current “patching” approach and overall QA level).
I use flash cs4 for animating a cartoon. I chose it over toon boom animate, but unless certain bugs don’t get fixed I will always feel like I made a bad choice.
The biggest problem being Flash CS4 crashes many times per day.
On complex bone tool structures I’ve seen symbols move out of place as I use the tool making it very frustrating to animate.
Commands that I assign a shortcut to don’t always work.
Zoomed in to the highest magnification sometimes curved lines like circles will become jagged for no apparent reason when I select them.
I use a lot of nested graphic symbols so I can select which frame inside the symbol I want to show, but sometimes cs4 will not let me choose the frames I want even on a new keyframe.
I also don’t use the 3d tool, because as people said it blurs the object once it’s rotated.
It’s not a bug but I don’t see why Flash couldn’t have incorporated a camera into CS4 to direct the action on stage. Right now I’m using an actionscript3 Vcam but on bigger files it slows down.
There are many things I like in Flash but so far the negatives I’ve encountered in CS4 have outweighed the positives. I hope adobe will release a new update as soon as possible so I can continue work on my cartoon.
yes
I am a student taking a Flash class (CS4 on a Mac at home, on a PC at school). I am having trouble just opening a Flash document that I was working in just a day or so ago. Nothing fancy…… learning to “tween” with text and shapes thus far. What is the problem with Flash that I cannot open a saved .fla file. Is there a update I can download for the Mac (OS 10.5). I have plenty of ram, etc. Would appreciate some feedback and/or help.
Thanks, Donna
I’m really frustrated how unstable Flash CS4 seems to be. It feels like a beta (if not alpha…) product. For instance, a classic Timeline Tween with multiple filters constantly crashes Flash CS4. Or: at random, Flash CS4 is crashing just being opened for some hours…you come back from lunch,Flash CS4 crashed meanwhile.
Or: within some hours, the GUI becomes somewhat slow, the panels only resize in slowmotion and than crash, of course.
Other issues:
The undocked panels can only be resized by dragging them from the bottom ! If the panel bottom is out of the screen, you cannot resize the panel by dragging, because you cannot grab it !! (already mentioned in an other post, yes i know, but this is so idiotic, a prank or so.)
Selling this crap to loyal customers is not the way Adobe should go. In Europe, Flash CS4 costs almost twice as much as in the USA, there is absolutely no comprehensible or even fair reason (except brutal money making) for that. I tell you, for the next years i will not buy anything from Adobe.
BTW: tried Flash CS4 on XP32 XP64 and Vista32/64, Vista32 seems most stable, but far from anything what you could regard as finished and ready to be released software product for the pro-market.
Comments on Galvan’s blog are still not working so I’ll join the rant club here..
The continued lack of a proper code editor a major disappointment for me. Having spent time recently on a Flex project, I can’t go back and have now started using Flex Builder for editing AS files in my Flash projects. We pay a lot for the Flash IDE, is code look-up too much to expect?
Also, the floating Main toolbar is ridiculous! There’s no where to put it and it’s even on top of the swf testing window.
I was just working on something this afternoon with no problems. Then tonight open the same document, well, actually all of my old documents, even new ones, and I seem to have trouble with the text tool. Once selected, it will not allow me to see properties of anything else including document properties. It then crashes over and over again. Is there a limit to how many or type of fonts installed on a machine? That is the only thing I can think of right now. I have the Master Collection and love the way CS4 now has the same look across apps, but this is kinda unacceptable. I just need to get something out the door right now. Guess I’ll install FlashDevelop or Flex.
Hi,
I just posted my gripe with Flash, but after searching some more, it is indeed the fonts. I guess CS4 only allows certain fonts or a limit? But anyways, I uninstalled all of my Adobe Type 1 fonts and just kept TrueType and OpenType and that seemed to cure the Text Tool problem. Back to work.
As gludion said, CS4 is way too expensive in Europe. Every flasher I know has to buy it in the USA to save around 500 euros.
About the Flash usage, the only thing that concerns me is the lack of new stuffs for coding. This is exactly like in CS3 and I don’t really see the interest to get CS4 except compiling with it.
The new Help system is no good too, why not just update the CS3 system?
the price!
Another complaint I have, is that the complaint blog has been broken for at least a few days now.
http://blogs.adobe.com/cgi-bin/mt-comments.cgi
Rebuild failed: Writing to ‘/site/blogs.adobe.com/htdocs/rgalvan/2009/01/concerns_and_issues_with_flash.html’ failed: Opening local file ‘/site/blogs.adobe.com/htdocs/rgalvan/2009/01/concerns_and_issues_with_flash.html’ failed: Read-only file system
Well this version of flash has been one of the most disappointing version of flash since flash 7. instead of iproving existing features they consitrated on bringing new shining – headline – features like “3d!” “bone thingy tool!” which is known to all of us by now, is pretty unusable, especially to modern classic animators.
i have so many complains i almost dont know where to start:
- selecting objects is mega-sluggish. even the newest Computer with 8 Mb of RAM, and super highspeed HD wont help you with this: after a while working selecting a raw object (even a small ink line) is delayed. pretty horrible for animators. when you cant draw with a flow- you can’t draw at all.
- that fency new tween and bone tool is no use for advanced users since you cant apply it to a graphic symbol (and because of that, you cant manipulate object internal frames on the fly, to see on the main timeline when the object will look like- only with AS to move frames inside a MC)
- as others said earlier, the whole programs is pretty sluggish, this drives me crazy, i really regret upgrading.
I tried leaving a post four times at his site. Kept getting errors. *blargh*
***
I am having a very frustrating bug in Flash CS4.
When I click on a form component text, radio, etc and click on Component Inspector. The values of prior objects I click on populate the entries of the new object.
The result is that they get over-written.
ARGGGHHHH!
[...] With Adobe Flash CS4 being out for a few months now, is there anything about it that is bugging you? (except for the AS editor) If so, head over to Lee’s blog and let your voice be heard. [...]
Hi
I need to vent this. Flash CS4 officially bought version keeps crashing on me. I just lost cumbersome design work, my only risk of losing work as a Developer, as I usually only have flash open to run my in an external editor created code.
new HP-PC, fully powered, running stable, VistaBiz32Bit…
6x today::
2x import image ->crash
copy paste -> crash
open second file(both small size)->crash
just crash
just crash.
The last one hurt, therefor VENTING here.
So, Designers can not use it, animators can not use it, Devlopers just keep it open for creating swfs, sounds like a winner to me!
not much more to say – just built a new PC. 8gb 1333rpm Ram – Vista HP 64bit blah blah blah – i use flash for web development and other animation projects.
ive had cs4 like a week now and its crashed at least 3 times a day since.
at first i though “fuck 64bit, im going back to 32″ but pretty much every other program on my computer runs sweeter than a nut in the sun EXCEPT flash cs4.
terrible terrible. going back to cs3 – its not perfect but its not complete garbage either…
The properties palette is now several times larger than previous versions, and it shows less info in quadruple the space! Who the hell thought this up? There are scroll windows within scroll windows, and some of the icons are beyond tiny to click on.
All the palettes are based in flash. They are buggy, snap to everything, and randomly turn into little nubbins or docked icon menus.
This is some of the worst UI in software development. For shame, adobe.
I purchased the Adobe Creative Suite 4 package, and just about every program I use CRASHES. WTF?? Is there anything I can do to correct this problem, or does Adobe products just suck.
The IDE is horrible. I just LOST my actions panel, and cannot access it anymore. For anything.
How can this shit be released? I can get a monstrous Actions panel that takes up the whole screen, or if I dock it, it’s minimized and nothing shows. There is nothing else I can do.
I’ve been programming for 25 years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen. How can you possibly lose your code panel? I don’t know, but I managed it. This is horrible.
Seriously, though, how do I get out of this situation? The Actions panel is minimized, docked in the window, and shows nothing…I guess I can’t use Actions anymore. Seriously, WTF?
I have 2 mayor bugs in Flash. The first one is more known it is the use of switching between spaces in OSX. Opening for example a fla file in lets say another space using the finder makes the tab leave on that specific space while he flips back to the space where Flash is opened. Flash won’t be operable anymore. Only by closing the fla and restarting makes it move again. The second one is in the behaviors panel. Whenever I try to choose a behavior Flash will stall and not respond anymore. The other day I even was reading typeface choices in the behaviors panel. Really ackward.
I found a solution to the crashing and the problem I was having with dynamic text fields. Initially if I created a dynamic text field and click on the text box so that I could set the properties Flash would crash. More often Flash would not crash but the propeties panel for the text field would be all funky – glitchy, no way to give the dynamic text field an instance name.
I created a new user account on my Windows XP machine and Flash CS4 worked fine. Went back to my normal user account and pinpointed that a trial version of Dreamweaver CS3 was causing a conflict with Flash CS4. I have DW MX 2004 so I never purchased DW CS3 and never unintalled it either. Anyhow, problem solved!
Weird behaviour when using 3D in the timeline:
I have 2 movies: “main” and “sub”. “sub” contains a timeline-3D-animation, simply tweening z and the rotations. “sub” is 640×360 big.
“main” is 1000×700 and loads in “sub” to play it back. weirdly, all 3D-objects, especially their z-values are completely nuts.
Next thing I tried was just “pre-rendering” it to a bitmap-data-clip instead of adding and playing it back. Same result: 3D-stuff was off everything, kinda too small/too far away.
One thing I can imagine for the wishlist is a boolean attribute like “lock3D” that allows importing clips with 3D stuff in it having different sizes.
Every time I hit the text tool button, flash cs4 crashes. I hear this could be a fonts issue, but it sounds like an adobe issue, every other adobe product (even Microsoft products!) recognizes these fonts. Has anyone heard of a solution for this, maybe even a flash update. Any additional information would be helpful.
The Solution is Simple Guys.
Go to your Preferences > ActionScript > ActionScript 3.0 Settings and Use the FlexBuilder 3.2 SDK (coming with Flex Builder 3)under Flex SDK Path.
Thats it. Flash CS4 Runs Stable.
Cheers
Flash is a good software, ADOBE after the acquisition, I look forward to more. I thought that there would be a praise of the new era. Only the surface, everything will only allow users to more disappointment, FLASH CS4 is proof of that. The collapse of the normal job so that I can not. Bought CS3, and then bought CS4, so we all just want to work in previous versions. CS4’s a lot of questions. ADOBE hope that as soon as possible.
CTEL + SHIFT + D shortcut key, will always make the collapse of FLASH CS4.
Graphics components set up the skeleton, the property panel in the property set into a movie clip, so that after the property put into a layer of bone running example, testing export collapse will destroy it, to try a number of times, it will collapse the number of times destroyed.
FLASH allow the use of the bones of the job change more slowly, sometimes moving about for a long time and so on. Wait for improvement. Do not now have, always will be sluggish because of death. Flash CS4 features the most imperfect, as are “FLASH BABY”.
Don’t get me wrong I love flash, but I am getting ever more frustrated with it crashing on me. (I do have win XPx64(which isn’t helping the situation)) File importing kills it, adding blurs to fairly small images kills it, and for some reason on both copies of CS4 the alpha slider only goes up to 99% cant get it to nudge over too 100% (has anyone else found this) Generally I will use AS3 to do stuff like tweened alphas, but for quick and easy transitions…
Flash CS4 won’t stay open long enough to even use.

Hi there,
I spent well over 2 hours developing this animation for a company. I saved it, 2 minutes later Flash CS4 for Mac crashed, and when I tried to reopen the file I was left with a single layer and all of my animations gone, despite my efforts to save it every 5 minutes…
Ok… All Mac users hear this…
Flash CS4, CS3 on Mac cannot write Greek with any font when the textfield is static and the anialias is set to off (Bitmap Text)..
Im Greek and most of my customers r Greek… what do i need the orbit 3D tools and all that SHiuT when i cant do the simplier thing: Write Greek.
Thanks Adobe… Give Flash back to Macromedia!
Same problem here. Flash CS4 crashes when trying to add a symbol to the stage and sometimes when navigating the library.
Windows Vista x64 / 4GB RAM
I am adding this post to the bugs list as it received no replies but I am starting to get emails from people reporting that they are having this same problem and asking if I have found a solution which I have not.
working with CS4. when I am at the office I am working on a PC (windows XP).
When I go home and work on the same file I am using CS4 on a mac OS 10.5.
It started with a long line of text I had set in a long narrow background bar. I would notice it appeared too high so I would move it down. Then I would find myself moving it up.
I did this a few times thinking I must have just nudged it by mistake. Then I realized something was going on. Last night at home on the mac, I spent quite a while laying out many static text boxes perfectly on an 18 pixel vertical grid.
Today I opened that file at work and all off the text sat exactly 3 pixels below the grid line.
It is the exact same file, both machines have the exact same font files.
has anyone seen this?
It is not just in the design environment.
It displays differently when I test the movie, play the swf, or view it in a browser.
The swf made on my PC shows the text lower. Open the same file and export to swf on mac and the text is higher.
obviously it is a little difficult to clearly explain such a visual problem in words.
So I have put up a page with an explanation and screen captures of the same file done on PC and mac. That should make things pretty clear.
http://www.gasolicious.com/flashstuf…t_problem.html
I do not really expect anyone to fix this, it seems like a bug.
link above for my text problem should be
http://www.gasolicious.com/flashstuff/Flash_CS4_text_problem.html
I have the issue that the actionscript window is very slow,
When I type, it takes a second before I see the character..
It’s really annoying..
The “help” reminds me of Corel Draw, circa 1996. To call it help is actually not doing the definition of “help” any justice.
…CS4 is shit…I’m an animator and have to use this chuggy piece of shit at work…I wish wankerws would leave shit alone…it was perfect at flash 8
ARRRRHHHGGG…chug chug chug!…I FUCKING HATE IT!!!
I have been trying to create a gif web banner using flash. Everything look great in flash, flash player and quicktime but when I export or publish as a gif my background image is grainy and pixelated. My document is saved as 500X90. My background image was saved out of photoshop as 72 dpi. 500X90. I tried saving the image as .tif, .png, .jpg, all with the same result.
I’m not sure if this is the problem or not as I’m a freshman user but I have the background image running on its own timeline that runs the length of the movie. Also the animated text/symbols created in flash look perfect when I save it as a gif the only thing effected is the background image. I’m stuck, I have looked all over the web for the answer. On a side note I’m using a Mac running os x 10.4.11
Thank for any help.
The Flash CS4 IDE is 95% useless on a Vista PC. The interface is sluggish and undependable, every click comes with a feeling of uncertainty because you never know if it’s going to crash the app or not. I now save my files literally every single time I make a change, no matter how small, because you never know when you’re going to lose all of your work.
Clicking on a textfield crashes the application. Creating a Textfield on the stage produces an empty Properties panel with no visible icons or dropdowns until their bounding boxes are moused over. It’s an absolutely horrible experience.
95% of my development happens in Flex, but I get .fla’s from clients regularly and it’s an absolute nightmare. I always open them up, save them as CS3, and reopen them in CS3, which actually allows me to edit with some semblance of tactile response.
I hate to say it, but Adobe really phoned it in with CS4, at least under Vista. If this were a Photoshop thread, you’d see an equal amount of frustration, but for the sake of brevity, I’ll stay on topic.
I battled with CS4 for a good month at work, and just today i ‘bit the bullet’ and re-installed CS3. This is also embarrassing as i convinced my boss it was a good idea to upgrade.
CS4 had lots of crashing, especially when dealing with large libraries or imported image sequences. ‘alt-dragging’ (duplicating) complicated movie clips created a plethora of problems. It is extremely frustrating working in the fear that every move could send flash into fits. What is the deal here? Did Adobe do more than a few hours of beta testing? My guess is they had only a few movie clips at a time while testing.
At home on my mac the situation is even worse. All i see is spinning wheels, even when doing the most mundane tasks like selecting a movie clip.
I hope a Bug fix is released soon so the massive $$$ cost wasn’t in vain. This is beyond pathetic and i am losing patience with adobes silence on the issue. A simple press release from them re-assuring that they care for their customer base and have plans to remedy the issue would alleviate some angst.
I didn’t go through all the comments, but it seems the change to the help in CS4 didn’t go down very well. It’s also a big sore spot for myself. Most people don’t like that it goes online; I can live with that. I just can’t stand that it opens a new browser window. That kind of decentralizes my workflow away from what is at hand. Fortunately, I am using Flex or Eclipse for dev now, so it hasn’t driven me to madness yet.
So, all I want for Christmas is a Help Panel. Or maybe just a plugin that is a web browser Panel. Maybe an idea for a future project, Lee. It’s safe to say you would be a hero to all if you did produce this plugin.
More detailed griping here.

I am using Flash CS4 and my Property Panel seems to be stuck on a text option even when I select Movie Clips or Graphics on the stage, it is not updating. Anyone know a fix for this? It makes working in Flash CS4 almost impossible right now… any thoughts feedback welcome.
I’m finding Flash CS4 on Mac to be a nightmare to use… my text blocks do not render correctly… at first I thought it might be due to the use of OpenType fonts But my PS fonts also give me crap results (wrong leading, wrong alignment, I’ll set my text flush and I get the render to be aligned left) also manipulating about any object onstage is awfully sluggish… on a MacPro with 7GB of Ram… excuse me ?!? I could rip my hair out with this piece of expensive shit.. I went from a CS3 that worked fine to a piece of gargbage that feels like I’m running some sort of java on an emulator on a MACPLUS lol…
How can a company like Adobe even put out anything close to buggy on a commercial release used by so many professionals ??? I feel adobe has become a compete Windows product (is is as buggy on Windows as well ?!?).. it makes me very sad. Anyway this is just a complaint post (so I don’t end up at the psychiatrist.. who would just tell me to not take things so seriupulsy.. but it is serious, it’ is how I make a living !)… and now I cannot possibly work and am really really freaked out and worried as to how to deal with this… what do I do now, reinstall CS3 ? Return all my working files to CS3 (even keeping them as CS3.. which is a supposed option with CS4.. I get all the nightmarish type setting oddities…. Adobe should be sued for all the trauma it imposes on afaithful user base, losing many many days of work (and thus money, rent, food) to try and fix the unfixable…What do you tell clients.. “oh sorry, my expensive software doesn’t really work anymore, they sold it as better but made it worsed.. yeah I know it makes no sense yet it is true.. do you believe me client”… wow.. great excuse… ADOBITCH you have come a long way.. and NOT IN A GOOD WAY !!!!!!!!!!
Adobe has finally released Flash CS4 update 10.0.2 today!! I hope it will solve many issues I have encountered, especially slowness.
[...] most of the issues that people have been having with it. Many of you gave some very honest feedback in this post and I want you to know that it was instrumental in getting this update out. The Flash team has been [...]
Yea, i got a problem. While installing i dont have enough space. So I try to install to a seprate partition (with 26gb free) and i get the out of space error. Anyone else have this problem, and what do i do about it?
Test Movie renders incorrectly sometimes. It’s very frustrating…
As an animator who uses flash, I can say that CS4 has completely gone against my grain. The interface isnt as intuitive, and it crashes a LOT when there’s a lot of vector data, which only happened rarely when CS3 was my main tool for animation/graphic designs. Nearly every time I select a raw shape and a symbol, Flash will freeze and die.
i’m a developer and still use flash 8 at work because of some major flaws in the cs3 & 4 actions panels. would you please make the scroll wheel work again in the actions panel (and fire whoever disabled it) ? i know adobe won’t let you but you ought to lose the cs4 toolbars because they break the user’s workflow and impose adobe’s instead. i for example have my windows set up so that rightclicking on the entire part of the top bar closes the window and middleclicking minimizes it. as of cs3 adobe felt the need to impose their toolbars system, breaking the default window behaviours. not ok
its really anoying to see that not a single bug in flash cs4 has been fixed, for example you have an animation with ~100 subanimations in it, cs4 will do only 1 click per 5 seconds, wile cs3 does work properly.
another issue that is not fixed since ages, change the compression-value of an embeded image… the image will show ab once and then disapear.
terrible is also the cripled tweening, which is not that smooth anymore like in cs3.
to say i am not a guy that buys software right when it comes out, so i was very very suprised of all those bugs in flash, adobe will never fix this issues as it seems. well i will simply not buy next cs release then…
Seriously WTF!!? floating main and controller toolbars!!!?!!
Something as simple as this may prevent me from upgrading.
I really wish that each new version of Flash didn’t mean
a new UI design concept. STOP IT ALREADY.
New features and interface are nice but that’s about it.
Unfortunately, Flash CS4 crashes on me at 5 times a day on average and application performance is horrid and everything feels sluggish.
Inconsistencies with Actionscript are also rampant. e.g. ’stage’ sometimes doesn’t exist in the first frame of a movie clip and traces to a ‘null’, but works in the second frame. What’s up with that?
I’ve used Flash since Flash 4 and it feels increasingly buggier and sluggish with each release, especially since Adobe took over.
Ive had the same problem… brought brand new dell. Windows vista 64bit, 6gb ram. quad core 2. Then flash cant even keep up with my typing. RUBBISH!!
So on the program files/flash.exe I selected run this program in compatilbilty mode for (windows xp SP2
and things are definantly better. Maybe can a solution.
@gazman
as i terrorized the adobe support with serious questions, they gave me the answer its not vista64 certified. well i can tell it for sure, it is not related to vista64, just bad programming on adobe-side.
Incredibly poor performance on a moderately powerful machine. Working with nested clips is virtually impossible. Operations that took fractions of a second now hang Flash for several seconds.
My library panel shows up blank most of the time.
Tweening/syncing is a nightmare (too hard to explain the details here).
In the future, I would advise Adobe not to rush a release. You are supposed to debug an application BEFORE releasing it to the public. I am thoroughly disgusted and am sticking with CS3.
I’m troubled with a rather odd bug with Flash CS 4.0 .
On “test movie” in the flash IDE the content (graphics, movieclips or other) on the stage is moved aproximately 100 pixels down on the Y axis. If I chose test movie again, the content is moved even further down by another 100 pixels or so.
The flash test movie window boundaries are also enlarged in height on subsequent “test movie” cmd+ enter key presses?
If I view the compiled swf in standalone flashplayer or through the brower it displays fine.
It rather sucks that i cannot find someone else that has encountered this anywhere on google.
Thought I should atleast tell the word about it. I run osx 10.5.7 btw.
CS4 is borderline unusable. I’ve never seen anything run so slow on my machine. And it’s quite a beast – Vista 64 Ultimate, 12 GB DDR3 RAM, i7 Quad Core overclocked at 3.2 GHz, and ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2 video card.
And please don’t give me the “Vista’s garbage” rhetoric. Every other piece of software on this machine just flies. VS 2008, 2010, Eclipse / FlexBuilder, you name it. CS4 is the only software package causing me trouble (other than Flex Eclipse plug-in crashing 20 times a day, but that’s another issue).
Don’t get me wrong, I love the new ideas, flash / flex integration etc… But what good is a 50% productivity improvement via new features when the performance itself is causing 100% increased waste of time?
CS 4 is to Adobe what Vista is to Microsoft. I just can’t wait for a “Windows 7″ version of CS 4.
when i try to make the bottom of my logo spin it works fine at first but then near the end the image starts to lean back like it is tired of standing and i cannot see why and i need some help my boss needs this
help
I just upgraded to Flash CD4, so far not happy. When I add a filter to a keyframe/timeline. It applies it for a little while, then randomly it drops it. I just gave to keep applying it before I make my final SWF. Thank goodness it’s not a very long animation, this could be a big problem.
Anyone have this issue?? I would love to know if maybe I am doing somthing.
Thanks!!
Hi there, I got the Adobe CS4 design pack specifically so I could get the plugin for QT pro to export to flv. But it’s not there. My friend has CS3 and it cam with Flash video encoder. The design pack does come with Adobe media encoder, but that doesn’t output correctlly, whereas QT pro does.
Any idea?
Thanks
I have seen a handful of font complaints and I have one to add to that growing list. I have opened a fla file that was developed in 06 when I open the fla in CS4 i get that font mapping popup. I know I have the font installed but flash just cant find it. The font is a TT and I know its installed… fonts in Flash are hit or miss.
What can I say? I’m a character animator and I can no longer see what my animation REALLY looks like on the Flash timeline. With a document frame rate set to 30fps and only moderately complex SINGLE character animation, I get a playback rate of about 15fps. I now have to make swfs constantly just to see what the true timing of my animation is. I’m running Vista 64 on a 4GB 2Gz Core 2 Duo. If I weren’t required to use CS4 at the workplace (because the programmers use it), I would still be using CS3. Adobe gets a big fat “F” for this disaster.
Hello, if someone could tell me if they got weird text blocks, meaning I cannot seem to set up a static text block in a WYSIWYG manner since CS4, my text is not spaced the same once exported.. my fonts are embedded though.. dunno.. this is really odd.
I also get missing fonts messages sometimes when my fonts are not missing at all, as I read in a comment on here. Yeah that feels very buggy.
I cannot find much on CS4 and type issues on the net.. I cannot be the only person having issues with this ?!? I mean static text not being WYSIWYG anymore.. I cannot recall having issues like this with CS3.
If interface stuff does not work, might as well become a complete nerd/genius, go to Textmate or whatever and used MTASC to compile. And never launch Flash… Yes I’m grumpy.
I’ve always found Flash type-setting abilites to be extremely mediocre for a product used by many for text… sure who cares if you do animations only.. but I would imagine many many people design websites etc with text blocks in their designs obviously not just drawings or basic one liners, right ?!!!!!!
So please Adobe, redesign the whole bit, listen to your user base instead of trying to impress all the time with new crap and Adobe Labs stuff ! We need character and paragraph styles, we need centralized color swatches.. I mean we need stuff to make laying out anything graphic .. more efficient etc.
Adobe chases way too many hares… by wanting to step ahead one can easily trip… Adobe has tripped as far as I’m concerned. Stop wanting everything for everyone… make a few really really sturdy products like the Germans.. yeah I use a couple of German prodcuts (Ableton Live and Cinema 4D).. and I must admit that Germans impress me.. maybe it is just a generalistic point of view but their softs tend to be be very sturdy and efficient… that’s my perception at least.
Ok, in the heat of the annoyance I tried a bunch of things.. it would seem that certain fonts render perfectly well-spaced etc and some don’t.. and mind you I tested with Adobe Font Folio Fonts, and some do display fine upon render some do not.. so I cannot say it is something to do with say… a bad TrueType freeware font or whatever… I really want to figure this out, I hate “random” stuff… I need to pinpoint the specific problem.. any help is welcome.
Flash CS4 is terrible. It crashes constantly and freezes for a few seconds every now and then while it thinks about it’s ridiculous interface.
I don’t like the properties panel in CS4 it takes too much space tweens seem harder to do, help online is too slow, it is too heavy, it seems buggy. Basically I have only one use for CS4 and that is the video thing that is packaged with it, tell a lie if I need to import a swf because I deleted an asset when tidying up then CS4 flash seems better.
I have switched back to CS3 flash for layout of flash, timeline tweens etc and moved to Textmate and haXe for code. Please try to Adobe give me back my properties panel, I feel annoyed that I paid to upgrade.
Being almost impossible to use with a lower-than-high end spec machine? Excellent.
Having a completely different language and giving up on object behaviours? Brilliant move.
Being completely different from AS 2 with no direct convertion interface? immaculate.
But having all the windows clog up and stick to each other without your control? Priceless.
And to put the cherry on the top, I love the way all the toolbars fill up the screen in front of the ‘new project’ interface when you load up the program, just to give you that head start in ‘mouse digging’. It’s almost intentionally insultive. For the love of god, do you have any idea how difficult your program is to use!
I’m running Flash CS4 pro v10.0.2 on an Intel Mac Pro.
I have this strange trouble when I try to select the name of a layer, to rename it. The layer name goes into the edit box (the way you’d expect it to) but then quickly goes back to the uneditable state. If I click too many times on the name trying to edit it, Flash crashes.
The other trouble I have is that when I’ve got an object on the stage selected, and then want to edit the width, height, x, and y properties in the properties panel. I click on the first property, edit it, and then press tab to go to the next property. It flashes quickly as editable, and then goes back to the uneditable state. So I have to click on that property to edit it, rather than being able to navigate between them with the tab key.
Has this happened to anyone else?
I make it short, because I´m far too frustrated.
I have to make some animations for a website with a moving figure making some moves like standing up, sitting down etc.
The perfect tool for this could have been the bone tool. But what´s this? Every time I connect a body part with the bone tool, some clips move a bit randomly. Even writting down x/y-coordinates for every single clip to check them later doesn´t help, because they just don´t stay on their fxxxing place!
With the normal tweens, the job simply can´t be done in time.
Bones is dead, Jim…
HELP HELP HELP!!!!
I cannot use the AS panel to work in AS3 with Flash CS4 Professional. The window won’t just scroll down and give me the chance to edit the script.
How can this possibly happen???? I need to go ahead with my project and I am stuck because I cannot edit the script in the AS panel.
I am so frustrated, this was supposed to be innovative and better working, and it is actually 15 years backwards if you cannot simply minimize a window and operate a simple text editor task.
I have read other people in here had the same problem (Derek), is there a solution to this???
I have tried to do the update, but it is telling me that it cannot install them therefore asking me to quit. I work on a MAC OSX 10.5.8.
This is a joke that cost me money and now I even loosing some more because I cannot go ahead with my work.
Please someone reply to this.
Thank you.
Gabriele
Why was my comment abut the installation failure I had with CS4 deleted? Was it because I was looking for help, or was it because I’d thoughtfully included my OS version information *and* my console log dump in the post?
I’ve been using flash CS4 for a couple of days now and I seriously want to throw the program away. If it was up to me I’d rather use CS3 but I’m working on a project where I have to use CS4. Now I know that drawing and editing your line drawings was a bit of a nightmare in flash when u want nice clean smooth lines but somehow CS4 is even worse my lines are getting jaggy if I scale them and when I draw very small circles with the oval tool the lines become all jaggy. I tried this in CS3 and that was all fine.
The properties tab is also not an improvement. It’s working too slow for me, I can’t have a quick overview with the new layout. Another thing that annoyed me is that you’re able to drag the timeline out that easily. I do alot of animation and when I scrub through the timeline it happens that I accidentally drag the timeline out of it’s place.
There’s probably more annoying bugs in the program that I haven’t seen yet. This version gives me more headaches than productivity. If it was for me they could have just skipped this version.
some of the fonts come through jagged. i’m using some text that include Russian characters and it just displays them as bullets where in flash 8 they were displayed correctly. so far would not recommend.
Well my CS4 crashes every time I click “properties”. Apart from that I like the new path animation, the 3d options and the new as.
Hi,
while working with flash CS4 on Mac, I have found some major issues with text input fields and fonts in general.
Flash (or flash player) ignores keyboard language variability, so while typing on czech mac keyboard, flash display (as only app I have seen so far) different characters. Displaying of czech characters is alright, if I populate my textfields from xml input, in development mode, etc. .. The problem occurs really only when I want to type something in the textfield in flash player (or while testing the movie). This leads to the simple fact, that there is no possibility for Mac users to develop and even experience flash for Central Europe.
The problem with fonts is very simple. Flash has a major problem with mapping of OTF fonts. There are over 3000 fonts in my library and flash cs4 font list contains only about 200. If that were just Type A, PS or TT fonts, ok .. but the list contains some OTF fonts also. But when I can’t even see Helvetica Neue Pro, why is that? OTF is not a new platform for fonts and it was developed to be cross-platform. Other Adobe Apps see all my fonts, but Flash just doesn’t.
As a huge fan of flash projects and dynamic web experience, this version is a huge disaster. I had the chance to experience the same product on Win PC with almost same HW configuration, and sometimes I have to ask. Is this a development tool, or GTA 4 with best settings?
I have payed a lot (not to say the adobe pricing in Europe is double the US prices) and I have the feeling of having some beta version with all those bugs and no user-friendly test.
But more importantly, how do I get at least the keyboard input in textfields work??
With best regards ..
oMicrone
Czech Republic
EDIT: I have tested in some browsers, and Firefox on Mac handles the input correctly (in Flash CS4 or Safari the character mapping is wrong) ..
More and more clients are asking us to export our Flash projects to video to post to YouTube, Vimeo, Brightcove, etc.
On the Mac–even my shiny new 27\ iMac–exporting to QuickTime on both Flash CS3 and CS4 results in horrible video artifacts and glitches. Not so if I export the same file to QuickTime from Flash on Win.
Any chance Adobe is aware of the issue? The Adobe Support Forum has dozens of these reports. Any workarounds? A Win box with Flash is not always available to me.
I’m an as3 developer, don’t use flex since I want control over the appearance of my application. ’skinning’ is not enough. So I use this program to hold and position my assests when its a small project and I don’t want to write 10 lines of code to put the objects where I want them. Yet, even with this limitied use, I find more bugs with this CS4 version of flash than any other software I use. I’m on a mac, so its kind of odd, having this experience ‘oh look I have to quit the application since its so buggy it can’t even work.’ Seriously. Adobe, if you are going to create a windows type experience, look at what they are doing now. overbloated crap = bad business. Just as Vista gave way to Windows 7, so should this application lose all the useless overhead garbage that serves only to crash it.
Or at least make a version for programmers who have no need of flex, and aren’t going to waste time with IDE features they won’t use.
Fix the fonts. Somehow, you screwed up the tag in hmtlText. Now I have to put the font face in my xml everytime I want a freaking bold word. so 20-30 characters instead of 3. why use this product when I can just use ajax?
I import a graphic to a layer. it is the only unlocked layer. yet you create a new layer anyway, requiring me to cut and paste the object i imported, and delete this unneeded layer. seriously? you are going to make 5 steps out of 1 step process? something this basic?
I often have to just quit the application when working with nested movie clips. it will lose the ability to back out of a movie clip, trapping me in it forever. i don’t know if you are trying to create an allegorical user experience of Dante’s inferno, but the lessons are lost on me. I don’t get it. why does everything have to be a circle of hell?
dont give a crap for your inverse kinetics. dont give a crap for your motion editor. don’t give a crap for your 7 different overcrowded displays that crumble like edward scissorhand’s humans hands as vincent price dies from a heart attack when you just move one panel to another place. as a user, i would give anything to hold freakin winona rider with my bare hands and not have to worry about cutting everything to shreds and crashing the system from doing the simplest of tasks. thats right. you make your users feel like edward scissorhands. obviously usability isn’t even an afterthought. because you would rather have the user with freaking scissors on his hands, sitting in a circle of hell.
And I all I do is use this thing to store and position assests.
I have a bug on CS4 running on a macbook (black).
In CS4, when I save a file a rather over-the-top animation ’swooshes’ flash CS4 off and a ‘Save As’ dialogue opens enabling me to save the .fla.
Then when the ‘Save As’ dialogue disappears and I am returned to the IDE the main application title bar (with the minimise/maximise/close buttons on it) has disappeared!
I have installed the latest update and searched for more of them but this means that each time I save I have to close and then re-open the App. Also general panel/windows go wonky and often I can ’see through’ to any applications that are ‘underneath’ the instance of Flash that is running.
Pretty poor show. No similar problems with running CS4 at work on a PC.
Flash CS4 is an utter disgrace. If it were possible, I would literally spit on this product.
They have corrected nothing within it, yet only made it worse
Actionscript only allowed on layers now because people who read the code are too lazy to follow along with Actionscript on objects as well.
A bunch of SIMPLE features no longer work (masking, motion tween, etc)
The POINTLESS schemes (Essentials, Developer, Designer… they are all the same damn thing!) <– Lazy flash developers in the making.

Had to vent, ignore if you disagree with this
I am having a problem with Test Movie. It always opens the first window too small and then the second, bandwidth tester window, just right. I would have little problem pressing ctrl+enter again but here lies the big f-up. When I am using a tween engine such as Tweenlite, if I have chained my tweens together into an animation, on reload of the test movie in bandwidth mode, MY CHRISTING TWEENS FROM THE LAST CHRISTING TEST ARE STILL CHRISTING RUNNING!!!! I can’t even try to put into words how annoying this is. I am using this for work. This product cost hundreds of euros. I am using a copy of Flash in my second language. This is why people pirate your crap product. AHHHHH!!!
“Oldest first” comments sections are really annoying. Really, wtf is the point of me even writing this when only other commenters which will progressively be less the longer the comments get, will even read my verbal vomit?
Someone at Adobe needed a raise and probably went feature crazy. FLASH CS4 and ADOBE CS4 SUCK. Adobe CS4 is SO SLOW, it’s almost a disgrace. This feels like a big money grab and now i’m going to upgrade to CS5 because CS4 SUCKS… I’ve been using Adobe products from the very start and CS4 is like installing windows vista .. a terrible mistake… now im going to wait until adobe figures out how to fix this mess.. With FLASH CS4 I’m ok with a learning curve but when I can’t figure out how to to do the basicss i’m used to then your just pissing me off.
Flash CS5 can’t come soon enough – and it better be more reliable than CS4.
The text issues have cost me dozens of work hours, having to re-position textfields every time I re-open an FLA.
The mysterious bugs and crashes take me out of the productivity “zone” at least every hour.
I teach Flash at a local college and it is incredibly frustrating for students when they don’t know if they’re doing something wrong, or if its the Flash IDE acting up again.
It’s been over a year since Flash CS4 has released and I still can’t recommend it to students, clients or peers.
Adobe, if you want to sell product, you’ve got to make it reliable otherwise word-of-mouth is going to affect the bottom line.
I cannot find a way to increase the font size of the interface (menus, etc.) It is causing severe eyestrain to try to use CS4. Is there a way to increase the font size of the UI? If so, now? If not, what is the root cause of neglecting to consider the needs of users who are older, have imperfect eyesight, etc? I have seen this type of poor interface design when the designers were all inexperienced and in their 20’s. I would hope that Adobe has a team of UI engineers that have studied accessibility, usability, and modern web design a little.
Please provide a way to modify the font sizes.
solution for crashing on text tool or text objects:
on mac:
DELETE all duplicated or corrupted fonts in your font book, DON’T just disable them, cause flash won’t like it.
on pc:
since the genius windows doesn’t have a font book to identify the duplicates or the corrupted fonts, you need a 3rd party software to do that, don’t ask me.. google it.
ohhh i forgot,
you definitely need to update to 10.0.2 to eliminate font crashes completely.
peace out.
Another CRASH! Simply caused by dragging a file. I’m on Mac OSX 10.5.8 10GB memory. i am so mad!!!!! The saved file (saved many time) won’t open any more. All that work (days) gone. Has anyone used a swf decompiler to restore the swf to a fla?
I have a complaint about Flash – it crashes. Frequently and its incredibly annoying.
I am using CS4 on a PPC dual 2.7 Mac G5 and have been waiting to get a new Intel Gulftown Mac Pro but alas – they aren’t out yet. SO – is there anything I can do about this while I am stuck using this PPC Mac Pro?
I see a LOT of people complaining about a lot of issues with Flash here and I can barely use it without it crashing 10X times a session.
Hard to believe Adobe asks so much money for such buggy software. I think for CS5 – they should just make it work as promised.
I remember looking up the word fail in the dictionary and I saw a picture of CS4! I’ve been working on something for an hour straight and then suddenly CS4 crashes, no save back-up, nothing.
Oh and wait this isn’t the first time it happened, if I had to go back and count the number of crashes I’ve had you literally would have to be holding a calendar just to time me.
Not attempting to brag or anything but my child of 9, is quite a savant in Flash, but ever since he received a scarring crash on something he really worked hard on, whenever I show him the CS4 box he hides in a corner and starts crying.
Btw, in case it wasn’t already obvious I’m switching back to CS3. I’m just waiting for CS5 in the meanwhile. You know I’ve heard a lot of people are pirating the software, but I really think even that is not worth it.
- Good day.
Ok, after hours of frustration I found a solution to one of my slow FCS4 problem, Kaspersky IS 10. Unchecking “Disable external service control” under options restored FCS4 back to the speed I was accustomed to. If anyone else is running Kaspersky IS10 and has the same slow/never responce time in FCS4, try this and see if it helps.
Cheers,
Don
Second post on this topic — can the font size of the CS4 interface be made larger for those of us who do not have the Adobe programmers’ perfect eyesight? Didn’t Adobe ever hear of “accessibility”? Is Adobe even aware that this is a problem at all, or is it a deliberate “design” strategy to limit the Adobe market to only people in their 20’s? This is a major serious design flaw.
I’m having a problem with Flash CS4 IDE:
when using a tool, expecially the 3D tool, I cannot change float number values.
The values contain a comma (my international settings put a comma in numbers, instead of a decimal dot ex: 12,00 = 12.00) and it breaks the AS sintax.
I only get right things when I change international settings for numbers by putting a decimal dot… it sucks !
I think the IDE doesn’t have to consider international settings for numbers…
In adobes flash SVN can somebody revert to CS3 flash? I want my properties panel not to take the whole screen I want the old one back. I want all the panels not to mess up all time. The new tween stuff I don’t have time to mess with it just seems slower to use. My approach resave for CS3 code in textmate preferably using haXe. I am really worried I will have to start using CS5 or have to have 3versions of flash just so I can resave as CS3 flash, unless they actually sort out CS4? So my biggest request can we have a save as CS3 option in CS5?
Upon attempting to Publish my flash file as an animated GIF, the program crashes. EVERY time. Help. I’m on a PC running Vista [32-bit).
I’ve been using Flex Builder 3 for 99% of the time developing, but today I needed to update a simple movie using Flash CS4 Pro on my MacBook Pro (Mac OS 10.6.2). Each and every time I launch the app, it stalls and crashes after 10-20 seconds after the welcome dialog appears. This has happened on every occasion of trying this today, about 5 times. Curiously, on one attempt, it also caused the Flash Player running in Firefox to crash and disappear? I can reproduce this easily if you want a heap dump or something?
thanks,
Rasmus
After spending a lot of time dealing w/crash after crash after crash, I finally uninstalled Flash CS4, re-installed with the “Custom Settings” option (making sure that everything is being installed) and then ran the 5/13/09 – CS4 Update from http://www.adobe.com/support/flash/downloads.html
No more crashing!!!
Previously when I would try and run the above update it was saying that certain libraries were not installed so it couldn’t update, which is why I re-installed everything.
I hope this helps someone!!
My biggest complaint with Flash CS4 is that it no longer renders as true Quicktime video. In fact any of it’s video output options really suck hard. I’ve been using Flash for over 10 years, it has always been able to render out as a Quicktime movie with the very smooth “Animation” compression setting. They entirely removed that feature, so now it just doesn’t render out to nice quality video anymore.
Why?!
I have had numerous problems with Flash CS4. I don’t recall them all because I end up going back to Flash CS3 every time in order to keep my sanity.
I too have been attempting to animate a character standing and a few idle motion loops. So far this task has been next to impossible.
-The keyframes for the bones tool stop representing reality. Even if I scale the animation in the timeline it still plays the first motion as if nothing happened
-When rigging the movie objects keep “shuffling” around as (Anemic) already mentioned.
-When I try to move my characters arm sometimes he just “floats away” off the screen for as long and far as I keep my mouse button clicked.
-Once I tried to have a point share 4 bones, one from the torso, head, left shoulder, right shoulder. it was impossible to do, my computer would freak out and give me the spinney candy wheel for minuets. I ended up having two armatures, one for the top torso and one for the bottom legs.
-The new keyframes are a nightmare! I cannot seem to edit them on the time line. I understand and appreciate the new dope sheet/curve editor thingy but it is not as intuitive as After effects -and that is not so easy either. As an animator speed in the interface is key, with so many moving things quick revisions need to be available right on the time line.
-the default properties sidebar does take up a lot of desktop real-estate. at work I run two monitors so no biggie but if I had to work on my tablet I would have to do contortions. perhaps autohide pallets like photoshop?
in conclusion I was really excited about the bones system and still have high hopes but right now it is painful. The timebar/keyframes I always thought could be improved a bit (I hate how flash always ads dangle useless keyframes every time I shift something)but what is worse then a cumbersome key frame is an impervious one. editing or even deletion is impossible without destroying my armature (which was more than tedious to get right). Keep fixing it up, it could be great. Until then, i am useing MX at home.
Hi Lee and you out there.
Here’s my complain: CS4 is completely terrible when it comes to fonts, most specifically embeded fontson dynamic text fields with latin characters.
I’ve done so many tests now to find out why some fonts are well embeded with those characters and others don’t – my conclusion: have no idea, maybe some kind of internal bug on flash about the letter spacings of some of them, I don’t really know, but one thing’s for sure, I’m very disappointed with Flash guys at Adobe cause it looks like they forgot about the non-states users that need good font support.
Flash should be more advanced than this now.
It’s a little but extremely annoying problem that makes us loose hours of work until we have to give up cause there’s no solution out there.
Other than this font problem I found the program really good in general way, but are the small and simplest bugs that should be corrected the great headache.
Cheers everybody.
Wow its quite scary to see that this thread is over a year old and still getting posts…
Just wondering if anyone has heard of a fix for crashing on a specific frames?
Basically I built a menu system before christmas, animated it ready to get added into the game when I got back to work but now it crashes whenever it hits frame 21 either scrubbing the timeline or pressing Enter to preview it… there’s nothing particularly heavy happening on that frame, four boxes with text are midway through rotating onscreen, there was only one keyframe on that frame so I deleted the layer to see if that was the issue but it still crashed, I’ve tried everything I can think of so any help would be appreciated
Cheers
update: while messing with motion tweens to try and fix the problem I dragged the timeline window up obscuring the bottom half of the stage… suddenly it worked perfectly… seems to be a rendering issue
I closed CS4 opened the file again and now it crashes on frame 29 but works fine when the stage is partially obscured
Just upgraded.
The removal of the motion tween option from the properties panel and the auto-syncing of classic tweens causes a big problem for character animators. Our characters usually have many nested symbols for swapping hand poses, torso angles, toe bends on a foot, etc. When we lay out our animation, we position our characters into their key poses, carefully selecting the right hands, torsos, tweaking and creating new variations of symbols to make the edges line up. For the character animator, tweening is a near final step.
Now when one applies a classic tween, all the careful work in selecting the right nested pieces gets washed away. You can unclick sync, but by that point the damage is already done. And if you try applying a tween to one keyframe, in infects the following keyframe with the sync issue, and you end up chasing it through the whole timeline.
This represents a big problem, as this is how ALL television Flash cartoons are produced.
We need to be able to classic tween without “syncing” turned on by default.
Oh, and I’ll mention the keyboard shortcuts suddenly failing to work until you quit and restart on the Mac has been an annoyance for many versions.
I am getting a error message saying low memory must suddenly quit. Then Flash CS4 Crashes. Computer has 4 gb memory. Running snow leopard. Flash is update to 10.02. It happens when I move pictures around in the timeline or goto render out a movie or move the playhead. Have had no luck with Adobe trying to fix my problems with this issue. Things I have tried to fix problem reset the Ram, using disk utility first aid then repair disk. any other suggestions please let me knows thanks for your help
I thought I would share my fix for some font related crashing (on OSX 10.5).
It seems that some of my fonts didn’t have a creation/modify date and that was causing some problems. I added mod dates for them and it seems to have fixed it.
If you’re noticing specific fonts causing a crash, I would check out the modification date.
It CRASHES CONSTANTLY!!
I got a new macbook pro with a 200gb SSHD about 6 months ago with os 10.5 on it, and installed adobe web premium cs4, flash worked fine. I up-graded to snow leopard a few months after getting my macbook, and still no issue.
Last week the SSHD died and I had it replaced under warranty. The store installed snow leopard straight up this time, and I have just re-installed adobe web premium. All the programs work fine, but the flash icon in the apps folder shows with a cross through it, and if I try to launch flash I get the error: you can’t open the app adobe flash cs4 because it is not supported on this type of mac.
I have done a bit of googling and see mixed reports of problems with flash after up-grading to os10.6 on mac, but not this error.
I have downloaded and installed the up-date 10.0.3 for flash but still no go.
Has anyone had this kind of experience?
I am getting error 5 on my flash cs4. what does that mean and how do i fix it?
I am having huge problems with flash CS4 using leopard. I can’t copy/ cut or drag items from the library, when i do the program crashes. I have tried it on my other computer and the same thing keeps happening.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Its driving me mad!
Every time I reopen a FLA for updating, the position of static text fields has moved, sometimes up to 50px on the y-axis. This is a horrible bug as it costs me many hours of repairing this nonsence. Wish I had never upgraded to CS4.
Shoot me CS4 !!!! going nuts here with this new IA, ended doing a stupid tween in after effect after waisting 2 hours trying to figure out this CRAP, can’t believe i requested CS4 for 8 machines at work!!!!!!!
IF YOU READ THIS DO NOT UPGRADE !!!!!!!
I’m on a mac running 10.6.2 Flash 10.02 I’ve discovered 2 basic if major problems the first that my Alpha slider more often than not won’t go to 0 or 100 when accessed from the properties palette. It won’t even let me type the number in? It means I have to go into motion editor and find the specific key frame then set it to zero which is a complete nightmare. I also discovered that Flash doesn’t seem to support the cutting and pasting of text from Microsoft Word 2008? I realise we sometimes have to let things go in the pursuit of progress but Cut and Paste!? Please help?
