A tribute to preloaders

The fine folks over at Big Spaceship have launched one of the coolest sites that I’ve seen in a while called Pretty Loaded. It is a tribute site to the lost art of Flash preloader design. I’ve always thought that a good preloader is vitally important because it is the first thing a user sees when coming to your site and remember, first impressions are everything. Nowadays with our blazing fast internet connections, preloaders are seen for a much shorter period of time. That notwithstanding, some preloaders are so well done that I wish I could throttle down my connection speed just so I can see them longer.

Great work guys!
Lee

An interesting site. Weirdly, on the one screen where you see a blue suitcase I continually got errors. Once I selected ‘Dismiss All’ all went well.

When our office connection was upgraded to glass-fiber we had the same problem: stuff loaded so fast we couldn’t check if our preloaders were working correctly. There’s a nice FireFox addon ‘Firefox Throttle’ on the addons-site that let us experience good-ol’ 56k speeds once again. Some preloader-minigames are just too much fun to miss :p

Great resource, makes me want to make preloaders now.

My friend was suppose to apply to BigSpaceShip. Wonder how that went…

Awesome. I’m telecommuting from Argentina right now, and here preloaders are alive and well!

    Hey Lee,

Thanks for the link to the site. We really appreciate it, and the feedback from everyone here. I’m looking into the suitcase loader glitch now. If you could post up your version of Flash and ideally what loader came immediately before and after it, that would help debug it. (Who knew that this site would become an homage to QA too?)

@Clemente G, we get lots of applications, but we’re always on the lookout for people who enjoy making things like PrettyLoaded… ;)

Very cool site. I also got some errors in debug player on certain parts.

Very nice. I know we’ve started spending more time building our preloaders and the clients usually appreciate it.

[...] Day 1: Probably my favorite of all online tutorial creators and gurus of any kind is a fella by the name of Lee Brimelow. I first learned about him awhile ago, he really has some quality material as well as being an awesome guy as far as sharing his work and everything he does for the Flash community. I absolutely love this recent blog posting on the lost art of designing preloaders. Great for inspiration and design ideas when working with flash, animations, or simply any preloading. They are all beautiful. Just stunning. I think the 3-d cube that constantly rearranges itself would be my favourite.
