Flasher Magazine coming soon to Adobe TV

For those who haven’t checked out Adobe TV yet, I highly recommend you do so. It is the new home for all video content coming out of Adobe. There is an incredible amount of video content ranging from tutorials, interviews, and also full shows created specifically for the site. My fellow evangelist Duane Nickull has one of the most entertaining shows called Duane’s World. It covers enterprise and standards development topics but does so in a very enjoyable way.

I have finally decided to put together a show called Flasher Magazine. This will obviously be focused on any and all things related to Flash. The similarity to Thrasher Magazine is not accidental as I grew up skateboarding. After high school I worked for Mack Dawg Productions shooting snowboard photos and video. I love the concept of a video magazine and I think it will be really entertaining and helpful at the same time.

I’m going to be shooting a bunch of video this weekend at LAFlashapaloozastock III and also in Vegas when I speak to the AUG there. But I would love to hear from you about what you would like to see in this show. I plan to cover conferences I attend, interviews with top Flashers, a couple of tutorials, and other fun or useful stuff that is going around at the time. Let me know if you have a good idea.

I’m not sure exactly when the first episode will come out but I’ll try to get cracking on it!

Lee

@marc Only if the ratings are low :-)

Having top flashers on interviews is cool, they usually have something new and surprising to show and tell. But just a quick idea – how about interviewing some average guys? Seeing the younger and passionate ones could be inspiring. True, it would be harder to find them and topics to talk, but, hey, maybe this can work!

@edris Great idea. I actually meet a lot of young up-and-comers at conferences so this would be a great showcase for them.

Hey Lee! I’m looking forward to watching your show on Adobe TV!! I will be sure to announce it at my Adobe club meeting (at the University of Advancing Technology in Arizona). If you are looking for someone young to interview, check me out!

Keep up the great work, Lee! I’ve watched all your gotoandlearn stuff and I can’t help but hear your name frequently pop up in my latest RSS feeds & podcasts

I’ve come back to Flash after a number of years away being sidetracked by other aspects of the business. I’ve come from the front end, designing a tunnel into the back of Flash, sometimes my crayons and pen tool get in the way of (better) Actionscript.

My biggest stumbling block, then as now, continues to be how to think like a programmer.

If that topic could be touched on in interviews, fleshed out as part of the process in tutorials, that would a help to me.

I think the Flasher Magazine is a wonderful idea, and I’ll be watching out for it to become a reality.

PS: If you do decide to disrobe, be sure to give us a heads-up – I’ll need to get extra beer and popcorn in for the occasion!

    Hi Lee!
Like everything else you do and share I’m like a dry spounge. Looking forward to the magazine videos. Sorry to hear about the situation at Adobe HQ and the layoffs. Hope this will not affect the fantastic work you’ve been doing.

    Thanks Lee :)

Talking with top flashers / studios about projects and solutions is THE thing i’m looking for. Good luck with the magazine Lee.

    Hey!

I really like this idea, it would be great to see a lot of the stuff you do behind the scenes with Adobe. Perhaps you can include some clips on how you brainstorm ideas for tutorials and other things you do, kind of a way to show us how you come up with all this stuff!

Another cool thing that you can include would be a tour of new cool stuff on the web for us to checkout, as we all know you are hook and the news feeds and always get stuff first, haha

Great idea, hope it works out well!

    Cheers,
    Jose

@lee this is great! Thrasher was the best back in my skating boarding days! I’m sure the Flash version will be just as good. Cheers!

I didn’t know you worked for Mack Dawg… That’s awesome! Year to year, I’m always waiting for their new videos to come out. Can’t wait to see some Flasher on Adobe TV!

Flash 10 3D or Papervision – In Depth Project. Maybe 3D Collada model building and implementing. Maybe loading assets from an XML and using them to make a 3D project. I leave it open, but we all need more about 3D.

Looking forward to the first episode. I have always enjoyed being able to speak to Adobe’s developers at conferences. In depth interviews with the Adobe Flash team would be great to get their side of the story when it comes to popular known bugs and performance restrictions.

I would like to see you make a tutorial about making a simple mp3 player with a listbox playlist in AS3, something similar to your AS2 tutorial.

And by similarity to Thrasher, you mean an outright ripoff of their logo. They even rhyme! I thought there would be a bit more creativity coming out of this place :( sad sad day.

@uhhuh that’s the point. It sounds like Thrasher and the logo looks like theirs too. It’s going to be like Thrasher for the Flash community. I think it is creative. But on the other hand bite me.

Lee – I loved all your work before – but this makes it even better! Skateboarding and having worked for MackDawg makes you even more a cool guy :-)

  22. December 5th, 2008 | 8:06 am

@lee that’s funny, somebody criticizing you for actually doing something to help them out, because i don’t see any other reason why they would be reading your blog. i bet that guy was a big fan of thrasher or something… anyways, everything about the idea is solid and creative, so if you have to, just keep ripping off as many other ideas as you can, i sure enjoy your non-creativity!

  23. December 5th, 2008 | 8:09 am

I’m pretty excited about Flasher. I love seeing interviews with top designers/developers…seeing how they get things done and learning from it.

Lee, which Mack Dawg videos did you work on? They were staple items getting me through the snowboarding off-season.

And “But on the other hand bite me” has to be the best criticism defense ever.

Great idea, I am new to the Flash community. I have looked to you for tips, references, entertainment (“on the other hand…”) My point, I think this is a great idea and see a lot of potential.
I would like to see it set up as a podcast. I like to listen or watch tutorials on the go (first to get an overview of what is being done) and then reference the files and examples later.
    Great work!

Looking forward to it. Better hope ol’ Jake Phelps doesn’t get pissed at you, ha ha!
