Modifying Keyboard Shortcuts in Flash CS4

I’ve gotten quite a few people asking why the Z key was mapped to the Bind tool in Flash CS4. The Z key is reserved for the Zoom tool in most other Creative Suite applications. Well the Zoom tool is now known as the Magnify tool in Flash CS4. Still doesn’t make much sense does it?

Well luckily it is very easy to modify your keyboard shortcuts to suit your own tastes. First select Keyboard Shortcuts from the Flash menu. Click the Duplicate Set button to copy the default shortcuts into a new set. From there you can modify them to your heart’s content. I chose to swap the keys for the Magnify and Bind tools. This puts the Z key back where it should be, controlling the zoom of your document.

Wait, people actually use Zoom as a tool?

I second Dru’s question. What not use spacebar + cmd (spacebar + ctrl on PC) to get the zoom tool temporarily? Much quicker. That also applies to all of the CS applications.

    Hey Lee,

Semi-related: I haven’t gotten my hands on a copy of CS4, but have they set a default key binding for “Edit in Place” yet? We switched ours here to Apple+P. Seeing as how we’ve uh… never needed to print from the IDE, it’s nice to have a simple hot key to jump into nested movieclips.

haven’t got my hands on flash cs4 either, so here goes my question:

Can you map shortcuts to custom tools in flash cs4 ?

I worked on a project in which I used a couple of custom tools and not beeing able to map shortcuts those tools helped suck the joy out that project.

@Jamie: No, no key binding in CS4. Seeing as how it’s super-easy to make your own bindings, I wouldn’t be holding my breath.

One of my biggest problems is that there is no shortcut for “TEST PROJECT” like in CS3. This is one very important shortcut..

    @Dean

I’m just guessing at the moment, but can’t you just write an one line of code JSFL file the runs the TEST PROJECT command and assign a keyboard shortcut ? Either fetch the command from the history or look it up in Help > Extending…I’m just guessing.

Thanks for the tip on the Zoom shortcut!

How about the shortcut that was in cs3 where it was possible to switch btwn tabs with Cmd+? How do I switch between tabs in cs4?

Mac’s have this strange problem with using the option key in a key sequence. http://codeendeavor.com/archives/160 – Mac’s will use a unicode character if one is mapped to the key.

Do you know of a bug database for Flash CS4?

Thanks, I knew to change my shortcuts but just googled to see if anyone else was bothered by this.

@mikey: I can’t remember if M was always the zoom shortcut, but when I installed cs4, I pulled up the ‘bones’ tool every minute by accident.. In photoshop ‘z’ is zoom, and when im toggling back and forth, it gets confusing…

I’ve always wondered if there is a way to map certain things like Alpha (in the properties panel). As someone that does a lot of animating on a daily basis anything to speed up the workflow would be nice. Also if there were shortcuts for tweening (ie 100%, -100%)

How is hitting CMD+Spacebar quicker than hitting Z? Why in the world would they change this key command after a decade of use? Ridiculous! Z is for ZOOM!

Thanks! That was really beginning to annoy me. I don’t know why Adobe isn’t being consistent with all their programs.

What I’d like to know about the shortcut making is why are my shortcuts constantly disappearing on me. One day I’ve got them all working the way I want them, the next day, none of them are there anymore and I have to reset them all. Kinda slows down production.

The zoom tool has NEVER just been M! “mikey”, how long have you used flash? I’ve been pressing Z for zoom since at least MX! It makes no sense to change it to M…

I changed my keyboard shortcuts but noticed something. When I hover over the icon, the shortcut symbol does not change. It still retains the original shortcut cut but the shortcut I made works though. The icon did not update itself. Is this a bug or did I miss something?
