Video Recap of Macworld 2008

Last week I attended Macworld 2008 and shot some video in the expo hall. There wasn’t anything that mind-blowing this year as far as I was concerned. But either way I thought I should do some kind of conference recap. So without further adieu…

Heya Lee — do you really expect us to believe you don’t know *anything* about Flash on the iPhone? :) I think a lot of people have just expected Adobe to be throwing resources at Apple to get Flash working on the iPhone — is this not the case?

Yeah honestly I know nothing. I’m sure there must be politics interfering somewhere but it’s way above my level. Adobe would love to have Flash on the iPhone but the feeling is that Apple is brewing their own technology for this kind of stuff.

Hey Lee, interesting little recap. You should have answered Mike’s phone call, though ;)

As far as Flash on the iPhone, I’ve always thought that it has more to do with the API, as in there’d have to be some sort of custom control methods and properties in order for the user to interact with a Flash movie to the full extent. I guess that’s just my theory, though.

Did Mike Chambers leave a message? :)

Maybe it was a good thing that the new MacBook is called Air and there was a presentation called Adobe Air! (the only good thing about this machine)

i wish apple would at least make a public statement regarding the issue. its a pretty popular request.

Flash on iPhone? Sure, but last time I checked – Flash (as well as Flash Lite) sucked big time on devices with 6-800 Mhz ARM-like CPU’s. My guess is that this has to do with processing power and not politics.

Just imagine what opening a site with 5 Flash-ads on would do to the overall performance of Safari with such a processor :D

Well that might be true Jensa, but now I have to play Bejeweled in Javascript which sucks. This all comes back to them wanting control over everything. I mean they still haven’t released a single game for the phone. They should at least put the standalone Flash player on the phone even if they don’t want it in Safari.

  10. January 22nd, 2008 | 2:32 pm

Yeah. I agree that the standalone player could work, but isn’t the CPU kind of weak? From my experience, a PocketPC’s with those specs would stutter if you tried to play a MP3 as background music to such a game. While the gameplay is simple, the Bejeweled versions that I have seen are quite CPU intensive in terms of animation and sound?

Anyway – it would be great if it was possible and I love this classic. Flash is omnipresent and if your browser lacks Flash, you’re really not getting the “full” experience.

Hey Lee, I was just wondering what camera you use for your recordings. Sorry if this question has already been asked before. Thanks!

correct me if i’m wrong, but technically isnt there some implementation of flash on the iphone just for the youtube app alone? They’re all FLV files – its got to be built off of that. I always assumed the lack of the flash plugin as a workaround for apple to avoid people realizing just how much slower the Edge network is that 3G. If people were hitting heavy flash sites on Edge theyd be making even more of a stink about not including 3G on rev 1 of the iphone. With users being forced to only view html the average page isnt going to be quite as potentially heavy. I’m inclined to think that when they go 3G, they’ll bring flash on board. Of course, it could definitely be processor related too – I know flash on my pocket pc is pretty rough at times (and thats with a 400mhz processor). Maybe they just dont want people seeing chugging graphics on their fantabulously oh so perfect interface :) Thoughts?

Jeff, no YouTube actually converts the video files that you see on the iphone to a format that is compatible with the iPhone.

Hey Lee, if you were fortunate or smart enough to attend the ‘Office for a Day’ on Monday and stick around the whole session, at the end of it, Microsoft threw in a full copy of Office. Not a student version either, a full blown version, Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition! I had platinum tickets and I could have attended, but Office is not really something I am all that interested in. But, receiving a $500 US software package, well that wouldn’t suck at all. I agree with your sentiments regarding the Macbook Air, (I think it sucks, totally nothing interesting regarding this product) and time capsule, c’mon people you can buy other wireless backup solutions which are much cheaper and do the same basic job. I don’t think having movie rentals are going to sell any more Apple TV’s. What people want is a Mac Mini with a massive hard drive, so you can back up all kinds of stuff and burn movies on DVD. People like having the media, despite what Jobs thinks.

I dont know alot about technology interms of cpus and things like that, but I do know about people and what they expect when they buy a device that advertizes lets say internet function. When we buy it we expect total internet function. Maybe it’s ignorance on my part but i love my iphone but a little dissapointed with the lack of flash and the total itunes control. It’s like when i bought my psp thinking it was true internet and i couldn’t even watch youtube videos. I was very dissapointed.
