Online Conversion of FLV Files!!

All I have to say is wow! I have been waiting for something like this for a long time. Have you ever seen a video you liked on YouTube or other video sharing site and wished that you had it on your hard drive? Better yet, have you ever wanted to include one of these videos in a presentation or share it with your friends? Yeah me too. I just found out about vixy.net which features a free, online conversion of FLV files to MPEG4. You can convert to a wide array of formats including AVI.

All you need to do is paste the URL and it will find out the actual FLV address and begin transcoding it. Once it is complete you will then be prompted to download the new video. It works flawlessly! Check out the comparison below of the results.

I#m a serious Journalist & FCP Specialist Teacher.
I have made many Test’s one Month ago and i can say for shure that Mpeg 4 is much much better than this Flash 8 compression….
Well Still Pictures is not a Problem for every Encoder but Moving Oictures with a lot of Colours is a huge different !!!
You Tube Video are CRAP !!!!!! & Most Flash 8 Videos are Crap tooo !!!! Cant’ see any details….

You are missing the point. The point is that you can generate MPEG4 files from YouTube videos. I’m not saying anything about MPEG4 versus Flash quality. The fact is that there are a lot videos on YouTube and being able to get MOV or AVI files of those videos is great. It helps to read the post before commenting.

That’s an amazingly useful tool! It can be so frustrating when you can only find a video on youtube and you can’t download it.

Thanks for passing that on Lee.

Thanks Lee, nice tool. But will I get a visit from the suits over downloading copyrighted material?

  10. May 14th, 2007 | 7:43 am

Another nice option in vixy is that you can save any youtube video as an audio file.

  11. May 14th, 2007 | 11:01 am

yeah.. it’s a great tool and might come in handy someday.. but if I wanna share a video, I just email the link to YouTube or so.. instead of having to download it first and then send big files in emails or messenger.

That is so damn funny. This guy describing himself as “I’m a serious Journalist & FCP Specialist Teacher.”, didn’t even read the post. I am certain that he simply looked at the spacial resolution of the images Lee provided and made an assumtion that this is what the text was describing. This is priceless!!!

It shows how importance of picture books. I have to say that this post might be the simgle most improtant supporting information I have that visuals can trump content. Shaun Inman just fell out of his Herman Miller…:-)

  19. May 16th, 2007 | 3:28 pm

Pretty cool, Lee. Not really sure what I would use it for though, as it does the opposite of what most people are after ;)

Oh, and you really should make an appearance over at GTAL. The kids are getting restless (no, not THAT restless), it seems that we are going to be having in depth conversations with spambots soon (actually, some of us already are *cough*ibrent)…

@jesper – I’m looking for the opposite. A way to convert other formats to FLV. Online-app world be great. Is anybody aware of such service?

You’ll need to use Flash Media Server for that, or check out Red5 (I’ve only heard rumors about that, though). Also check out FFMpeg.

Also, I’ve found a hosting company that includes FFMpeg as part of their hosting plans, and for a very good price. – http://www.cirtexhosting.com . I can’t speak for them just yet, as I’m still contemplating the switch myself.

you can do it with riva encoder (ffmpeg/lame). you just have to type the file extension in and set the res high.

its not meant to be used that way but it works hehe.
