New tutorial on Flash Builder 4 data integration

I just finished uploading a new tutorial that shows how easy it is to integrate server-side data into your Flex 4 applications using Flash Builder 4. In the example I display results from the Twitter search API in a datagrid without having to write a single line of code. These new features make it incredibly easy to connect to things like ColdFusion, ZendAMF, LiveCycle DS, etc. Definitely one of my favorite Flash Builder 4 features.

Adobe workshops in Latin America

As many of you know I just returned from my first trip to South America and I had an amazing time presenting to Flash designers and developers across Brasil and Colombia. I was surprised not only by the amount of people who attended but also the tremendous enthusiasm for the Flash Platform. I came away with a strong feeling that we are that we need to do much more than we are in the region. Unfortunately Adobe does not have a significant local presence in Latin America aside from some employees in Mexico and an amazing and overworked team in Brasil.

The biggest hurdle for evangelists to come to Latin America is simply budget. This is especially true in these economic times. What I would like to put together is a plan where I can come and deliver a full-day workshop to companies or groups in Latin America on a wide-range of topics relating to the Flash Platform. This would be a great opportunity to have an intensive, on-site training with someone direct from Adobe. The only cost you would have to incur would be my airfare to get me to wherever you are located. I will take care of the rest. You can get training for your whole team for less than it would cost to send one person to a conference.

From the Adobe side this would be extremely beneficial as well as we would also be able to present to the local user groups and connect with the local Adobe community. These are communities that we really need to get better acquainted with. Now this is just an idea I’m putting out there to gauge the interest for such a thing. But I think it would be something that would greatly benefit both the Flash community south of the equator and Adobe as well. Tell me what you think.

Adobe Dead Drop Challenge Coin

I have just received a box of collectible dead drop challenge coins. In future dead drops, these coins will be placed at the final clue. So in addition to the great prizes, winners will also own a unique piece of Adobe memorabilia. If a team wins I will distribute one to each team member. These are 2″ coins with an epoxy dome to help protect it from the elements. I have to say that the video below doesn’t do the coin justice. I’m proud to say I designed these myself in Illustrator :) .

If you previously won a dead drop, email me at brimelow [at] adobe so I can get one out to you.

Just Ask Us – Episode 01

Correction: Round-tripping between Catalyst and Flash Builder will most likely not be enabled in 1.0 but will come at a later point.

Update: You can also download and listen to an MP3 audio version of the video.

I have just finished uploading the first episode of Just Ask Us. The video below is around 45 minutes long and I got to 58 questions which is pretty good. The video below is being streamed with FMS so you can jump around easily to different parts. This is definitely something that I plan on doing again in the future so get your questions ready. If your question wasn’t answered in the video please try again next time. I’m also going to upload an iPod/iPhone compatible version soon for those who want to watch it on the go. Let me know what you think.

Why I’m switching back to Windows

Update: I have to say it’s funny how passionate people get about this topic. Just for some background, I developed on Vista for a couple of years before switching to OSX. I was one of the few who didn’t think it was that bad. But the important thing is that I have an Apple laptop so switching back and forth takes only a minute. Also, it’s important in my job to know what the experience of our tools is like on all operating systems. But those three ugly balls that constitute the close/minimize/maximize(sometimes) buttons on OSX are just too much for me to look at right now.

That’s right, I have switched to Windows 7 on my laptop for my day-to-day work. There are many reasons why I decided to do this. The biggest is simply that I am bored with OSX. For me, the look and feel of an OS is very important and OSX is really dated now. I have always loved the Aero glass look of Vista and it has only gotten nicer in Windows 7. There are also some really nice UI enhancements as well. A more practical reason is that the vast majority of the evangelism team is on OSX so I thought it would be good to try and balance things a little. After all, the majority of our users are not on OSX. The beauty of having a MacBook Pro is that I can still boot into OSX anytime I want as well so you get the best of both worlds.
